What if you could take your vacation to Florida this summer after all without traveling too far from home? Look no further! The answer is just a short car ride away in...Texas City, Texas. Grab your bags and pack your family in the car and head to Lago Mar.
Come celebrate summer while social distancing in Texas' only crystal clear lagoon. Texas City is about 45 minutes south of Houston, with no need for a plane. Take pictures with white sand, clear blue water, and palm trees; everyone will think you are in Florida! Lago Mar is a special amenity located in a master-planned community and they have opened their doors for the public to enjoy.
Lago Mar is a 12-acre, man-made lagoon, where you and your family can go swimming, bask in the sun, or sign up for some extra water activities to cool off. Make sure to purchase tickets online a few days ahead of time, as you can imagine they are selling out! Tickets are affordable and are cheaper during the week. If you have active kids that need to get some energy out, for separate fees you can sign them up for: a giant water obstacle course, kayaks, paddleboards, or a sailboat ride all in the lagoon. For those looking to take in some rays or a little more protection from the sun, you can rent a lounge chair & umbrella or a private cabana. Lago Mar also provides some picture-perfect wooden swings, and plenty of room to swim while maintaining 6 feet of social distancing and plenty of beach chairs and shade to relax.
When your family gets hungry, they have a variety of delicious food trucks ready to fill your cravings. They offer items like tacos, burgers, bbq, hot dogs, and pizza. I had the pizza and it was yummy and they even had a gluten-free option. With this heat, be sure to drink plenty of fluids; they offer soft drinks, Gatorade, water, flavored sorbet, and for adults...a bar. After all, you are on vacation! Food and drinks are pricey though and you can't bring in a cooler.
A plus for me was their luxury port-a-potties. These bathrooms were clean, smell good, roomy, air conditioned, have handwashing stations, and a wheelchair ramp. "Attendees can expect to see several COVID-19 related health protocols in place, including frequent sanitization of high-traffic areas. Guests are required to wear face masks to enter the lagoon and in certain areas, such as in food and merchandise lines. Staff is required to wear masks and undergo daily temperature checks."
What should you bring? Here are a few items your family might need: towels, sunblock, sunglasses, hats, goggles, floaties, pool toys, sand toys, picnic blanket, or portable beach chairs. This is a no re-entry water park so make sure you get everything you need out of your car before you enter the park. In case you forget something, they do sell some floaties, toys, and sunblock at the entrance. Oh, make sure to come in your swimsuit since they do not have dressing rooms.
My family and I are not ready to venture too far from home just yet. But social distancing does not mean you can't have fun! In times like these, all we can do is stop, take a deep breath, and remember to listen to our children laugh and smile. They won't be this age again! Let us be grateful for each day He gives us.
